United Way is excited to announce that David Fuller, President and CEO of SunTrust Bank in Central Florida, has stepped forward to chair the 2011-12 fundraising campaign, which officially kicks off next month.
Fuller, one of the region’s top banking executives, said he is honored to lead the annual fundraising effort, which last year raised $17.4 million to help Central Floridians in need.
Given the ongoing economic climate – and the growing number of residents still unable to afford basic needs ‒ he noted that the campaign’s success has never been more important.
Rich History of Philanthropy
“We live in a great community with a rich history of involvement and philanthropy,” Fuller said. “Over the years, we’ve never shied away from taking bold action in overcoming challenges – and we have that opportunity again today. That’s why I’m honored to lead this year’s campaign. I have every confidence that Central Floridians will rise up once again and join me in meeting tremendous needs within our community.”
Fuller, a Winter Park resident, moved to the area last year to assume leadership of SunTrust’s Central Florida Division, which includes 151 offices in 12 counties. He first joined SunTrust in 2004 and has been in banking for over 26 years.
Ideal to Lead Campaign
HFUW President/CEO Robert H. (Bob) Brown said Fuller’s leadership, passion and business insight make him ideal to lead the campaign. “Since David’s arrival in Central Florida, he’s immersed himself in the community and has become very knowledgeable about local issues and need,” said Brown. “He is smart, passionate, committed and imminently qualified.”
Since his election to the United Way Board of Directors earlier this year, Fuller has been an active community volunteer. During United Way Day of Action in June, he served as a volunteer reader at Richmond Heights Elementary School where he helped kick off United Way’s effort to recruit 3,000 local volunteer readers, tutors and mentors over the next three years. Throughout his career, Fuller has also volunteered with Junior Achievement and LightHouse for the Blind.
SunTrust: Newest Global Corporate Leader
Fuller’s decision to lead the campaign coincides with SunTrust’s new status as a United Way Worldwide Global Corporate Leader (GCL). The company underscored its commitment to United Way with a $2.88 million corporate gift from the SunTrust Foundation. GCL participation is by invitation-only and leverages the commitment and caring power of national and global corporations.
Nationally, SunTrust contributed $8.4 million to United Way organizations last year alone. Locally, the Central Florida Division generously donated more than $416,000, making them the sixth largest campaign.
