Novo Nordisk’s Biopharm Division recently partnered with Heart of Florida United Way in order to help people with disabilities in Central Florida.
Novo Nordisk employees from around the country were visiting Orlando for their semi-annual meeting so they didn’t have much time to spend on a volunteer project. However, they still managed to successfully build 66 wheelchairs to be donated to the Heart of Florida United Way’s Gifts In Kind Center (HFUW GIKC) for distribution to local charities.
Volunteers broke into teams of four to build the wheelchairs, and each team had a decorator. Once each chair was built, the teams attached a colorful, motivational sign to the back of the chair. Team leaders from Best Team Building, a corporate team building project organizer, were on hand to inspect each chair and verify that all the necessary pieces were in place.
Novo Nordisk wanted to be sure that some of the chairs were donated to military veterans with disabilities and the company had a very specific reason for that. Several of the teams have family members who are veterans, but there was one employee in particular whose husband is wheelchair-bound due to a recent accident. The woman’s husband is a veteran and the Novo Nordisk workers aimed to help people like him to be able to maintain productive lifestyles.
The HFUW GIKC distributed the wheelchairs to organizations that can get them into the hands of some of our community’s people in need. The groups that directly benefitted from the wheelchair donation were: Center for Independent Living, Coalition for the Homeless, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Quest, and Stepping Stone.
United Way would like to thank Best Team Building and Novo Nordisk’s Biopharm Division for their generous gift. These wheelchairs, valued at nearly $20,000, will serve as a valuable resource to Central Florida community members.
