As we approach the end of National Tutoring Week (October 7th – 11th), Together for Tomorrow (TFT) is proud to recognize Seminole State College (SSC) as an outstanding partner in our effort to meet the academic and social needs of our students. Since January 2013, SSC students have served as classroom assistants and tutors at Pine Crest Elementary School in Sanford. In fact, during the 2012-2013 school year, nearly 60 students from Professor Doreen Collins’ psychology classes volunteered at Pine Crest.
This partnership is poised to be even bigger this year as 40 SSC students have already started serving as mentors, tutors and classroom assistants and that number is expected to grow to more than 100 by the spring semester. Both the Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) and Pine Crest Elementary are thankful for SSC’s investment in this community’s children and look forward to building upon this partnership. The SSC volunteers are coordinated by Kathryn Kochan who is one of HFUW’s TFT VISTA volunteer managers.
