United Way programs give working families a chance for a new financial start

2013-Wordpress---EITCFor many, the inauguration of the new year means the advent of novel resolutions. Indeed, the new year is the ideal time to change something and to get things right. This is exactly what Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW), in partnership with the Prosperity Campaign of Central Florida, promotes: new beginnings.

We promote the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program because these resources have the potential to provide financial stability for working families throughout Central Florida. In doing so, EITC and VITA give working families a chance to start something new.

This year, HFUW will sponsor over 50 VITA sites throughout Central Florida. Additional information, such as dates and times, can be found at the HFUW website: (http://www.hfuw.org/Earned_Income_Tax_Credit_-_Tax_Sites.php).

HFUW also promotes BankOn Greater Orlando: an initiative by our local community, and financial organizations, to help Central Floridians open a bank account even if they have had problems with an account in the past, have never had an account before, or are not U.S. citizens.

Central Floridians have a chance to receive EITC, to save money by filing their taxes for free at VITA sites, and to avoid paying unnecessary fees to predatory lenders by opening a new bank account. Knowledge about EITC, VITA, and BankOn Greater Orlando can make a huge difference this year.

Here are five free and easy ways for anyone to get involved: (1) distribute our EITC “statement stuffers;” (2) have Heart of Florida United Way representatives participate at your next community event; (3) schedule an EITC presentation; (4) add a link to the Prosperity Campaign website to an appropriate page on your website; and (5) volunteer!
